These days you can assess your children’s age by their car seat as much as anything else. You certainly know they’re growing up when you fit their first booster seat!
Indeed, the booster seat enables children to make use of an adult seat belt for the first time. Most models utilise the back seat lap belt and the diagonal seat belt, which together secure child and seat. The booster seat is designed to lift the child to a safe height. In the event of an accident, the belts will restrain the child securely without danger to his or her growing body. Make sure to keep the belt across the hip bones and over the shoulder (it should never be in contact with the neck).
Depending on the weight of your child, booster seats come into use at around the time they start going to school. The all important weight range is 15 – 25kg. As with all other forms of child seat, booster seats are designed for use in the front or back of the car, although, we recommended the back as the very safest option.
Your kids will certainly feel more grown up when they’re sitting in their very own booster seat. Some models even come with detachable backs, so when the time comes, they can be easily converted into booster cushions.
As a busy parent you’ll also be relieved to hear that booster seats are legendarily less difficult to fit than baby seats and child seats. And, because they’re specifically designed to make use of the existing seatbelts, they’re generally more compatible with more types of car. Hopefully that will give mums and dads a bit of a boost too!
